Interleukin 12 (IL-12) production is a complex process primarily carried out by antigen-presenting cells (APCs) such as dendritic cells, macrophages, and monocytes. It involves the synthesis and secretion of the IL-12p70 heterodimer, composed of p35 and p40 subunits, following activation by pathogen recognition receptors (e.g., TLRs). IL-12 plays a crucial role in bridging innate and adaptive immunity by promoting Th1 differentiation and IFN-γ production, which are essential for controlling intracellular pathogens and shaping cellular immune responses. Dysregulation of IL-12 production is implicated in various diseases, including infectious diseases, autoimmune disorders, and cancer.
