Overview

Interleukin 12 receptor subunit beta 1 (IL12RB1), also known as CD212, is a critical component of the immune system. It is a type I transmembrane protein and a member of the hemopoietin receptor superfamily. IL12RB1 binds interleukin 12 (IL‑12) with low affinity and forms high-affinity functional receptor for interleukin‑12 when coexpressed with IL‑12Rβ2. It also forms functional interleukin‑23 receptor by associating with the IL23R subunit. It is essential for immune responses mediated by T cells and natural killer cells, involved in Th1 cell differentiation and host defense against intracellular pathogens. Mutations in this gene result in immunodeficiency syndromes characterized by susceptibility to severe mycobacterial and Salmonella infections.
