Interleukin 12 subunit beta (IL-12p40) is a cytokine subunit that is a component of both Interleukin 12 (IL-12) and Interleukin 23 (IL-23). IL-12p40 is crucial for Th1 differentiation and enhancing NK/T-cell cytotoxicity via IL-12, and regulates innate/adaptive immunity via Th17 through IL-23. It may act as an extracellular adapter forming de novo active cytokines
