Interleukin-13 (IL-13) is a cytokine primarily secreted by Th2 cells, mast cells, and other immune cells. It plays a crucial role in allergic inflammation, particularly in asthma and atopic dermatitis, by promoting IgE synthesis, mucus hypersecretion, airway hyperresponsiveness, and tissue fibrosis. It signals through the IL-4Rα/IL-13Rα1 receptor complex, activating the JAK/STAT6 pathway. IL-13 is also involved in defense against parasitic infections and contributes to various pathological processes, including ulcerative colitis, eosinophilic esophagitis, and certain cancers. Therapies targeting IL-13 are being developed for a range of inflammatory and fibrotic diseases.
