The Interleukin-2 (IL-2) pathway is a critical immune signaling cascade primarily involved in the regulation, growth, and differentiation of T cells, B cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and other immune cell types. IL-2 is a cytokine mainly produced by activated CD4+ T cells but can also be secreted by dendritic cells and B cells. The pathway is initiated by IL-2 binding to its receptor complex (IL-2R), leading to activation of downstream signaling pathways like JAK-STAT, PI3K/Akt/mTOR, and MAPK/ERK. It plays crucial roles in both pro-inflammatory responses and immune tolerance. Dysregulation can result in immunodeficiency or autoimmunity, and recombinant IL-2 is used therapeutically to boost immune responses against cancers.
