The interleukin-2 receptor alpha subunit (IL-2Rα), also known as CD25, is a component of the interleukin-2 receptor complex, which plays a central role in regulating immune responses. It is a type I transmembrane protein that binds IL-2 and increases the affinity of the receptor complex. IL-2Rα is essential for T cell proliferation, survival, and the function of regulatory T cells. Its expression is upregulated on activated T cells, and its soluble form can be used as a biomarker of immune activation.
Targeting IL-2Rα can modulate T cell activity and immune responses. Drugs that block IL-2Rα can suppress immune responses in autoimmune diseases or prevent transplant rejection. Conversely, drugs that activate IL-2 signaling through the receptor complex can enhance immune responses in cancer immunotherapy.
