Interleukin-2 (IL-2)-stimulated T cell maturation refers to the process by which IL-2, a cytokine produced primarily by activated T cells, drives the differentiation and functional development of immature or naïve T lymphocytes into mature effector and memory T cells. This process is central to adaptive immunity, influencing both the expansion and specialization of various T cell subsets.
IL-2 binding to IL-2 receptor complex activates JAK1/JAK3 tyrosine kinases, leading to STAT5 activation and regulation of gene expression programs controlling proliferation, survival, metabolism, effector function, and lineage commitment in maturing T cells.
