Overview
Interleukin 22 (IL-22) is a cytokine belonging to the IL-10 family. It primarily targets non-hematopoietic epithelial cells and fibroblasts in organs such as the lung, liver, kidney, thymus, pancreas, breast tissue, gut, skin and synovium. IL-22 promotes survival, proliferation, and wound healing in epithelial barriers, induces antimicrobial peptide synthesis, and enhances mucosal barrier defense. It can modulate inflammatory responses and its dysregulation contributes to the pathogenesis of various autoimmune diseases.
