Overview

Interleukin 5 (IL‑5) is a cytokine critical in the regulation and activation of eosinophils and B cells. It promotes eosinophil maturation, proliferation, activation, survival, and migration. It also stimulates B cell growth and differentiation, increasing immunoglobulin secretion. IL-5 is a key mediator of eosinophilic inflammation and is implicated in asthma, allergic diseases, and autoimmunity. Therapeutics targeting IL-5 have shown efficacy in reducing bronchial mucosal eosinophilia and asthma symptoms.

Mechanism of action

Anti–IL‑5 monoclonal antibodies neutralize IL-5, preventing it from binding to its receptor on eosinophils, thus reducing eosinophil activation and survival.
