The interleukin-5 receptor (IL-5R) beta subunit (βc) is a shared component of the IL-3, IL-5, and GM-CSF receptors. It is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein responsible for signal transduction upon ligand binding to the alpha subunits of these receptors. The beta subunit is expressed on nearly all leukocytes and plays a critical role in immune responses, particularly in eosinophil-mediated inflammation and allergic diseases such as asthma.
Drugs targeting the IL-5 signaling pathway may indirectly affect the function of the beta subunit by preventing IL-5 binding to the alpha subunit and subsequent recruitment of the beta subunit for signal transduction.
