Target intelligence / Profile preview
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Interleukin-8 (IL-8) secretion from urothelial cells refers to the biological process where the epithelial lining of the urinary tract releases pro-inflammatory signaling molecules in response to injury or infection. Urothelial cells act as primary sensors of the bladder environment, initiating immune responses via the secretion of IL-6, which mediates systemic inflammation, and IL-8 (CXCL8), which serves as a potent chemoattractant for neutrophil recruitment (PMID: 15664601, UniProt: P05231). Dysregulation of this secretory process is a hallmark of chronic inflammatory conditions such as interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), where elevated urinary levels of these cytokines correlate with pain severity and tissue damage (PMID: 11133337). In the context of bladder cancer, the urothelial secretome can promote an immunosuppressive microenvironment and facilitate tumor angiogenesis. While not a single molecular target, therapeutic strategies often aim to suppress this cytokine output using barrier-restoring agents like pentosan polysulfate sodium or targeted monoclonal antibodies to alleviate chronic inflammation (StatPearls: Interstitial Cystitis).
Modulation of the urothelial inflammatory response through cytokine neutralization, stabilization of the glycosaminoglycan layer, or inhibition of upstream signaling pathways.
