Overview
Interleukin 9 (IL-9) is a pleiotropic cytokine belonging to the interleukin family. It is primarily involved in immune system regulation and is produced by several immune cell types, including Th2, Th17, Treg, ILC2, mast cells and, most notably, Th9 cells. IL-9 exerts its biological effects through the IL-9 receptor complex, activating JAK1 and JAK3 kinases, and subsequently, STAT1, STAT3, and STAT5 transcription factors. It plays key roles in immune regulation, cell proliferation and survival, antibody production, allergic inflammation, and parasitic immunity. Dysregulation of IL-9 has been implicated in various inflammatory diseases, allergies, parasitic infections, and certain cancers.
