Interleukin 9 receptor pseudogene

Molecular classification

Overview

The interleukin 9 receptor pseudogene (ENSG00000255919) is a nonfunctional genomic DNA segment that resembles the interleukin 9 receptor (IL9R) gene but is not transcribed or translated into a functional protein. Pseudogenes typically arise through gene duplication or retrotransposition events and accumulate mutations that disrupt protein-coding potential, rendering them inactive. While most pseudogenes, including this one, are considered genomic "fossils" or "junk DNA," recent research has suggested that some may have regulatory roles in gene expression; however, such functions are exceptional rather than the rule, and the interleukin 9 receptor pseudogene is not known to be clinically or therapeutically relevant.
