The interleukin family (ILs) comprises a large group of cytokines that play central roles in immune system regulation, inflammation, and cell communication. These molecules are produced by various cell types and act primarily as immunomodulators or "secondary messengers" within the immune system. There are nearly 40 different interleukins identified to date. Dysregulation can contribute to chronic inflammatory diseases or autoinflammatory syndromes.
