Target intelligence / Profile preview
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited form of talk therapy developed to treat major depressive disorder, and now adapted for a range of mood and psychiatric conditions. IPT posits that psychological symptoms arise from current difficulties in interpersonal relationships and aims to improve interpersonal functioning, social support, and emotional well-being by focusing on one or more core problem areas: interpersonal conflict, role transitions, grief, and interpersonal deficits. IPT is usually delivered over 12–16 weekly sessions by a trained therapist and may be used in combination with drug therapy for optimal outcomes. The method emphasizes practical skill-building (such as communication analysis, role-play, and conflict resolution), is highly structured, and relies on a supportive, empathic therapeutic alliance.
Psychotherapy-mediated improvement in interpersonal functioning, social support, problem-solving skills, and emotional processing.
