Matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), also known as interstitial collagenase or fibroblast collagenase, is a zinc-dependent endopeptidase responsible for the degradation of extracellular matrix components, especially collagens. It plays a role in tissue remodeling, wound healing, and bone formation. Dysregulated MMP-1 activity contributes to diseases such as cancer, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease. Beyond ECM turnover, MMP-1 is involved in platelet activation and intracellular signaling.
