Interstitial fluid dynamics refers to the movement and behavior of interstitial fluid—the liquid found in the spaces between cells—within tissues. This process is essential for transporting water, ions, nutrients, signaling molecules, and waste products between blood vessels and cells. The flow is governed by hydrostatic pressure (from blood pushing plasma out of capillaries) and osmotic pressure (drawing water back into vessels), with excess interstitial fluid drained by the lymphatic system. Proper regulation maintains tissue health; dysregulation can contribute to conditions such as edema or influence disease progression in cancer, cardiovascular disorders, inflammation, or neurodegeneration. While "interstitial fluid" itself is a physiological compartment rather than a molecular target or receptor—and thus not considered a therapeutic target—understanding its dynamics is crucial for interpreting drug distribution within tissues and developing diagnostic biomarkers.
