Intestinal and vaginal epithelial cells represent the mucosal barriers of the gastrointestinal and female reproductive tracts, respectively. Intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) are primarily organized as a single layer of columnar cells specialized for nutrient absorption, mucus production, and the maintenance of a tight physical barrier against luminal pathogens (PubMed: 28461289). In contrast, vaginal epithelial cells form a non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium that undergoes cyclic changes in response to estrogen, providing a robust defense against mechanical stress and infection (PubMed: 25183486). Both cell types play pivotal roles in innate immunity by secreting antimicrobial peptides and cytokines, and they are frequently involved in inflammatory conditions such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) or infectious diseases like HIV and candidiasis (PubMed: 24631150). While these cells are not individual molecular targets, they serve as the site of action for various localized pharmacological interventions, including anti-inflammatory agents, microbicides, and probiotics aimed at restoring mucosal homeostasis (PubMed: 30103450).
