Intestinal bacteria and diarrheal pathogens refers to the complex ecosystem of microorganisms inhabiting the human gastrointestinal tract, encompassing both beneficial commensal flora and harmful infectious agents. Pathogenic bacteria such as Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella species, and various strains of Escherichia coli (e.g., ETEC, EHEC) are major causes of global morbidity and mortality, particularly in resource-limited settings (World Health Organization, 2023). These pathogens employ specialized virulence factors, such as enterotoxins that disrupt ion transport or invasive proteins that damage the intestinal epithelium, to induce fluid secretion and inflammation (StatPearls, 2023). Therapeutic strategies typically involve the use of antibiotics like ciprofloxacin or rifaximin to eradicate pathogens, although these agents can inadvertently cause dysbiosis and increase the risk of secondary infections like Clostridioides difficile (CDC, 2022). Because this term encompasses a broad array of species and clinical conditions rather than a single molecular entity like a receptor or enzyme, it is classified as a general microbiological category rather than a specific therapeutic target.
Antibiotics inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis, protein synthesis, or DNA replication; antidiarrheals like loperamide act as mu-opioid receptor agonists to reduce intestinal motility (StatPearls, 2023).
