Overview

Intestinal chloride channels are integral membrane proteins located primarily on the apical surface of epithelial cells lining the intestine. Their main function is to mediate the secretion of chloride ions (Cl-) into the intestinal lumen, driving water movement into the gut by osmosis. Major types include CFTR, ClC-2, and CaCCs, each regulated by different signaling pathways and playing distinct roles in intestinal fluid balance and motility. They are therapeutic targets for gastrointestinal disorders like constipation and diarrhea.
