These include both brush border enzymes—such as lactase, maltase, sucrase, and peptidases—produced by enterocytes lining the intestinal wall, and pancreatic enzymes—such as amylase, lipase, trypsinogen/trypsin—that are secreted into the intestinal lumen via the pancreas. These enzymes catalyze the breakdown of complex carbohydrates into simple sugars (e.g., maltose to glucose by maltase), proteins into amino acids (by peptidases), and fats into fatty acids and glycerol (by lipases). Proper function is essential for nutrient absorption; deficiencies or dysfunction can result in malabsorption syndromes such as lactose intolerance or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.
