Intestinal disaccharidases are a group of glycoside hydrolase enzymes located in the brush border of the small intestine. Their primary function is to catalyze the hydrolysis of dietary disaccharides—such as sucrose, lactose, maltose, isomaltose, and trehalose—into absorbable monosaccharides (glucose, galactose, fructose), which can then be transported across the intestinal epithelium for absorption into the bloodstream. Deficiencies in these enzymes lead to malabsorption syndromes.
