The intestinal epithelial barrier is a complex, multicellular structure that separates the intestinal lumen from the underlying tissues. It consists of a single layer of epithelial cells connected by tight junctions, a mucus layer, and an underlying lamina propria containing immune cells. Its primary function is to selectively allow nutrient absorption while preventing the passage of harmful substances and pathogens. Disruption of this barrier, often referred to as "leaky gut," is implicated in various gastrointestinal and systemic diseases.
