Overview

Gastrointestinal epithelial cells are the highly specialized and dynamic cell populations lining the gastrointestinal tract. They form a single-cell-thick barrier that mediates nutrient absorption, secretion, and immune interactions, and maintain a critical interface between the lumen and the underlying tissue. Major classes include enterocytes (absorption), goblet cells (mucus secretion), Paneth cells (antimicrobial defense), and enteroendocrine cells (hormone secretion). These populations are continuously replenished from stem cells in the crypts and undergo rapid turnover. Disruption of gastrointestinal epithelial cell functions is central to many diseases, including inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic conditions
