Overview

Intestinal epithelial cells are specialized cells that form the single-cell thick layer lining the intestinal tract, acting as both a physical barrier and an active participant in the host's mucosal immune response. They express a range of pattern recognition receptors (such as TLRs, NLRs, and RLRs) and produce antimicrobial peptides, cytokines, and chemokines to regulate the local immune environment. IECs sense luminal microbes and danger signals, communicate with immune cells in the lamina propria, and participate in immune tolerance and defense against infection. Disruption of IEC barrier or immune functions is associated with numerous intestinal diseases, including infections, chronic inflammation, and impaired healing. The immune response coordinated by IECs is essential for balancing host defense and tolerance of commensal microbiota.
