Overview

Intestinal epithelial cell transporters comprise *a diverse group of membrane proteins found on the apical and basolateral surfaces of IECs, including enterocytes, goblet cells, Paneth cells, and others*. They regulate the directed movement of glucose, amino acids, electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride), water, and metabolites between the lumen and blood. Major families include sodium-glucose co-transporters (SGLTs), glucose facilitators (GLUTs), sodium-hydrogen exchangers (NHEs), epithelial sodium channels (ENaC), cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), and chloride-bicarbonate exchangers (DRA/SLC26A3), among others. Expression and function of these transporters are tightly regulated and critical for nutrient absorption, fluid and electrolyte balance, defense against pathogens, and maintenance of intestinal homeostasis. Dysregulation is implicated in various diseases, making individual transporters important drug targets for conditions such as cystic fibrosis, diarrhea, and constipation.
