Overview

Intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) are a diverse group of cells forming a single-cell-thick layer lining the luminal surface of the intestinal tract. This epithelium is essential for digestion, nutrient absorption, and serving as a barrier to protect the body from pathogens and toxins. IECs are continuously renewed every 4–5 days by stem cells located at the base of intestinal crypts. Main types include: Enterocytes (nutrient absorption), Goblet Cells (mucus secretion), Paneth Cells (antimicrobial defense, stem cell support), Neuroendocrine/Enteroendocrine Cells (hormone release), Tuft Cells (immune signaling), and Microfold (M) Cells (antigen uptake).
