Intestinal Epithelial Cell Fluid Secretion (IEC Fluid Secretion)

Target
IEC Fluid Secretion

01

Overview

Intestinal epithelial cell fluid secretion is the process by which cells lining the intestine actively transport ions, primarily chloride (Cl⁻), into the intestinal lumen, creating an osmotic gradient that drives water movement and results in fluid secretion. This mechanism is essential for maintaining intestinal homeostasis, facilitating digestion and absorption, and defending against pathogens. Key components include the Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase and NKCC1 on the basolateral membrane and CFTR on the apical membrane. Dysregulation of this process is implicated in diseases such as diarrhea and cystic fibrosis.
