Intestinal gas bubbles are collections of gases within the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract, typically composed of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen, and sometimes methane. These gases originate from swallowed air, diffusion from the bloodstream, and fermentation of carbohydrates by colonic bacteria. Intestinal gas is a normal byproduct of digestion and motility, but abnormal accumulation or impaired transit may contribute to symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and distension, particularly in gastrointestinal functional disorders. Intestinal gas bubbles do not represent a drug target in the classical pharmacological sense—they are not proteins, nucleic acids, or organized cellular structures but a physical/chemical phenomenon. There is no single molecule, receptor, or gene product termed "Intestinal gas bubble"—it is a descriptive, non-specific, physical entity. Drug approaches for GI symptom relief (e.g., simethicone, which coalesces bubbles to ease gas passage) do not act upon a protein or receptor but alter the physical properties of gas/liquid surface tension in the gut lumen.
