Osmotic laxatives, including polyethylene glycol and magnesium salts, exert an osmotic pressure that retains water within the intestinal lumen, softening the stool and increasing its volume (Mayo Clinic, 2023 [https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/constipation/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20353965]). Maintaining the appropriate balance of water and bulk is essential for preventing conditions like chronic constipation, fecal impaction, and diarrhea-related dehydration.
