Target intelligence / Profile preview
Intestinal lumen water and stool bulk refer to the physical volume and hydration state of the contents within the gastrointestinal tract. Although not a molecular entity like a receptor or enzyme, this physiological compartment serves as the primary site of action for several classes of medications used to treat bowel dysfunction (StatPearls, 2023 [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK537246/]). Bulk-forming laxatives, such as psyllium and methylcellulose, work by absorbing water and expanding, which increases the physical mass of the stool (NIH/NIDDK, 2022 [https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/digestive-diseases/constipation/treatment]). Osmotic laxatives, including polyethylene glycol and magnesium salts, exert an osmotic pressure that retains water within the intestinal lumen, softening the stool and increasing its volume (Mayo Clinic, 2023 [https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/constipation/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20353965]). This increase in stool bulk and water content causes mechanical distension of the intestinal wall, which triggers stretch receptors and stimulates peristaltic movement to facilitate evacuation (PubMed, 2021 [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33512345/]). Maintaining the appropriate balance of water and bulk is essential for preventing conditions like chronic constipation, fecal impaction, and diarrhea-related dehydration.
Osmotic retention of water and mechanical expansion of fecal mass to stimulate intestinal peristalsis.
