When this balance is disrupted, it leads to clinical conditions such as secretory diarrhea, where excessive fluid enters the lumen, or constipation, where fluid absorption is excessive. Pharmacological agents like linaclotide and tenapanor target specific transporters within this system to restore fluid homeostasis in patients with irritable bowel syndrome or chronic constipation (FDA, 2012). Consequently, while "intestinal lumen water balance" describes a biological state, the actual therapeutic targets are the individual ion channels and transporters that maintain it.
