Overview

Clinical conditions such as diarrhea involve an excess of luminal water and electrolytes, while constipation involves a deficit (Merck Manual, 2023). Pharmacological interventions often target this system by using osmotic agents to retain water in the lumen or by modulating specific ion transporters to alter fluid secretion and absorption (PubChem, 2024). Monitoring these levels is crucial in managing dehydration and electrolyte imbalances, particularly in vulnerable populations like children and the elderly (WHO, 2021).
