Overview

Intestinal microbiota modulation via competitive exclusion or probiotic effect refers to the intentional alteration of the composition and/or function of gut microbial communities to promote health or prevent/treat disease. This can be achieved by introducing live beneficial microbes (probiotics), dietary components supporting beneficial bacteria (prebiotics), combinations thereof (synbiotics), or by transplantation of a complete microbiome (fecal microbiota transplantation). Competitive exclusion describes the ecological principle where introduced or resident benign microbes outcompete potential pathogens for resources or niches, thereby enhancing colonization resistance. Mechanisms include direct niche competition, production of antimicrobial metabolites (such as lactic acid, bacteriocins, and short-chain fatty acids), modification of gut pH, and immune system modulation. While this concept is therapeutically significant, it represents a mode of action or therapeutic strategy, not a discrete molecular or receptor target.
