Overview

The intestinal mucosa and stool interface is the physiological boundary where the host's intestinal epithelium meets the luminal contents, including the gut microbiota and fecal matter. This interface is primarily composed of a protective mucus layer that acts as a selective filter, allowing for the absorption of nutrients while preventing the translocation of pathogens and pro-inflammatory antigens into the systemic circulation (Johansson et al., 2015, Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology). It plays a vital role in immune homeostasis by facilitating cross-talk between commensal bacteria and the mucosal immune system (Belkaid & Hand, 2014, Cell). Although it is a complex microenvironment rather than a single molecular target, it is the focus of therapeutic strategies like fecal microbiota transplantation and mucosal protectants designed to restore barrier integrity and microbial balance (Groschwitz & Hogan, 2009, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology).
