Intestinal Mucosal Cell

Molecular classification
Epithelial Cell
01

Overview

Intestinal mucosal cells are the primary epithelial cells lining the innermost layer (mucosa) of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. These cells play a central role in digestion, nutrient absorption, immune defense, and maintaining a barrier between the intestinal lumen and underlying tissues. The mucosa is composed of three main layers: epithelium, lamina propria, and muscularis mucosae. The epithelium consists of specialized cell types including enterocytes, goblet cells, enteroendocrine cells, Paneth cells, and M-cells. These cells contribute to the barrier function, mucus secretion, immune defense, absorption, and digestion.
