Intestinal Barrier Function

Molecular classification
Multi-component system, Epithelial barrier, Immune barrier, Microbial barrier
01

Overview

The intestinal barrier function is a complex, multi-layered system that selectively allows the absorption of nutrients while preventing the entry of harmful substances into the bloodstream. It comprises the epithelial cell layer connected by tight junctions, the gut microbiota, and the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). Dysfunction of the intestinal barrier, often referred to as "leaky gut," is implicated in various diseases due to increased permeability and translocation of bacteria and toxins.

Mechanism of action

Varied, depending on the specific drug/intervention. Includes modulation of tight junction proteins, promotion of beneficial microbiota, reduction of inflammation, and direct barrier-protective effects.
