Intestinal smooth muscle cells are specialized, non-striated muscle cells that form the muscular layer of the gastrointestinal tract. Their primary function is to generate coordinated contractions (peristalsis) that propel contents through the intestines. These cells are indirectly targeted by stimulant laxatives such as senna and bisacodyl, which induce bowel movements by stimulating or irritating these muscles, leading to increased contractility.
