Overview

Intestinal uptake transporters are a diverse group of membrane proteins found on the apical surface of intestinal epithelial cells (enterocytes) that mediate the absorption of nutrients and drugs from the gut lumen into the body. Major families include solute carrier (SLC) transporters such as PEPT1 (SLC15A1, peptide transporter), SGLT1 (SLC5A1, sodium-glucose transporter), MCT1 (SLC16A1, monocarboxylate transporter), ASBT (SLC10A2, bile acid transporter), and OCTN2 (SLC22A5, carnitine transporter). They play crucial roles in oral drug bioavailability, nutrient absorption, drug-drug interactions, and are increasingly targeted in drug design (both for prodrug development and to avoid adverse absorption effects).
