Intestinal retention of water via an osmotic effect—such as that caused by excess oral intake of ascorbic acid—is a well-characterized physiological response. It results from increased luminal osmolality due to unabsorbed molecules drawing fluid into or preventing its reabsorption from the gut. This mechanism underlies both therapeutic uses (osmotic laxatives) and side effects associated with high-dose vitamin C supplementation.
