Intracellular Calcium Channels

Molecular classification
Ion channel
01

Overview

Intracellular calcium channels are specialized ion channels located on the membranes of intracellular organelles, primarily the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), that mediate the release of calcium ions (Ca²⁺) from these stores into the cytoplasm. This release is crucial for a wide range of cellular processes, including muscle contraction, neurotransmitter release, gene expression, cell growth, and apoptosis. Major types include Ryanodine Receptors (RyRs) and Inositol 1,4,5-Trisphosphate Receptors (IP₃Rs).
