Overview

Intracellular calcium influx refers to the process by which calcium ions (Ca²⁺) enter the cytoplasm of a cell, either from the extracellular environment through the plasma membrane or from internal stores such as the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria. This influx is a fundamental event in cellular signaling, acting as a second messenger that regulates numerous physiological processes including muscle contraction, neurotransmitter release, gene expression, cell proliferation, and apoptosis.
