Target intelligence / Profile preview
The intracellular calcium signaling pathway is a fundamental cellular mechanism in which calcium ions (Ca²⁺) act as versatile second messengers to regulate a wide array of physiological processes. These include cell excitability, exocytosis, motility, apoptosis, gene transcription, and more. The pathway involves tightly controlled changes in cytosolic Ca²⁺ concentration through release from intracellular stores (primarily the endoplasmic reticulum [ER] and mitochondria) or influx from the extracellular space via plasma membrane channels.
Modulation of intracellular calcium concentrations, either by affecting calcium channels, pumps, or intracellular stores.
