Intracellular metabolic machinery is a collective term for the integrated network of enzymes, cofactors, and organelles, such as mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum, that execute the biochemical reactions necessary for cellular life (StatPearls, 2023). Because these processes are ubiquitous and essential, pharmacological interventions must precisely target specific nodes within the machinery to avoid widespread systemic toxicity (Trends in Pharmacological Sciences, 2018).
