Intracellular steroid receptors are a class of intracellular proteins that bind steroid hormones and function as ligand-activated transcription factors. Upon hormone binding, they regulate gene expression by interacting with specific DNA sequences, leading to changes in cellular function. Major subtypes include estrogen, androgen, glucocorticoid, mineralocorticoid, and progesterone receptors.
Ligand binding induces conformational change, receptor dimerization, nuclear translocation, DNA binding to hormone response elements (HREs), and modulation of gene transcription via recruitment of coactivators or corepressors.
