Overview

Intraluminal obstruction is a clinical and pathological condition characterized by a physical blockage within the internal space (lumen) of a tubular anatomical structure, most commonly the gastrointestinal tract (StatPearls, 2023). It is not a protein, receptor, or enzyme, and therefore does not function as a molecular therapeutic target in the context of pharmacology (Merck Manual, 2024). The obstruction can be caused by various entities, including gallstones, bezoars, impacted fecal matter, or swallowed foreign bodies. Because the condition is mechanical in nature, treatment typically requires physical intervention such as surgery or endoscopy rather than direct molecular modulation by drugs. While medications may be used to address symptoms or underlying causes—such as laxatives for fecal impaction—the obstruction itself lacks the biochemical properties of a drug target.
