Overview

Intravascular oncotic pressure is the osmotic pressure exerted by proteins, primarily albumin, in blood plasma. It plays a critical role in maintaining fluid balance between the intravascular and interstitial spaces by drawing water into the capillaries, counteracting hydrostatic pressure. Decreased oncotic pressure can lead to edema and fluid accumulation in tissues, while increased oncotic pressure helps retain fluid within the vessels. Measurement and maintenance of appropriate oncotic pressure are important in various clinical conditions, including malnutrition, liver disease, nephrotic syndrome, and shock.
