Overview

Intravascular volume refers to the total volume of blood within a patient’s circulatory system, specifically the blood plasma component contained within the arteries, veins, capillaries, and heart chambers at any given time. It is a critical subset of extracellular fluid and is distinct from interstitial fluid and intracellular fluid. Intravascular volume status is essential for assessing overall body hydration but does not always correlate directly with total body water. Depletion leads to hemodynamic instability, and restoration through intravenous fluids or other therapies is fundamental in perioperative care, shock management, and severe vomiting/diarrhea cases. The body regulates intravascular volume via neural, endocrine, and autoregulatory mechanisms. Volume depletion (hypovolemia) results from loss of sodium-rich fluids. Intravascular volume is a physiological parameter representing circulating plasma crucial for cardiovascular homeostasis, guiding clinical interventions across many acute care settings.
