Iodine atoms are used as the primary X-ray attenuating component in iodinated contrast agents for medical imaging such as CT and angiography. Their high atomic number (Z=53) leads to efficient photoelectric absorption of X-rays, particularly near the K-edge energy (~33 keV), resulting in enhanced contrast between tissues containing the agent and surrounding soft tissues. While providing high image contrast, the use of iodinated contrast agents carries risks of adverse reactions, including hypersensitivity and nephrotoxicity.
