Ion Exchange

"Ion exchange" is not a therapeutic target in the pharmaceutical sense. It is a physicochemical process, not a molecule, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other biological entity that can be directly targeted by drugs. Ion exchange is a reversible chemical process in which dissolved ions in a solution are exchanged with ions held on an insoluble solid material. This process occurs across various contexts, including water treatment, biochemistry (e.g., chromatography), and cellular biology (e.g., via specific protein transporters like Na+/Ca2+ exchangers). However, ion exchange itself is a mechanism or process, not a discrete molecular entity suitable for direct drug targeting. Drug targets must be specific molecules such as proteins (receptors, enzymes, transporters), RNA molecules, or DNA sequences. If a specific ion exchange protein (e.g., NCX, NHE) is intended, that would constitute a valid therapeutic target.
