Overview

Ionising radiation emitters are sources—either natural or artificial—that release ionising radiation, a form of energy capable of removing tightly bound electrons from atoms, thereby creating ions. This process is called ionisation. Ionising radiation can be emitted as electromagnetic waves (such as X-rays and gamma rays) or as subatomic particles (such as alpha particles, beta particles, and neutrons). Ionising radiation can disrupt molecular bonds by displacing electrons causing cell damage and DNA lesions. Chronic exposure increases cancer risk proportionally to dose received. Characteristic DNA damage includes closely spaced multiple lesions that may overwhelm cellular repair mechanisms. Some damaged cells may escape normal controls and become cancerous over time. Ionising radiation emitters play critical roles across science and medicine but pose significant health risks if not properly controlled due to their ability to cause cellular and genetic damage leading potentially to malignancy over time. Their use is regulated internationally with strict safety guidelines issued by organizations such as the International Commission on Radiological Protection.
